See how toys have changed in our amazing toy gallery.

Compare materials used in old and new toys, investigate mechanisms, experiment with optical toys and have fun playing with our replica ‘old’ toys.

In this session, children will:

  • compare old and new toys and the different materials they are made from.
  • investigate the different mechanisms in our old toys - from cogs and cams to wheels and ramps.
  • experiment making ‘moving pictures’ and colourful shadows with plenty of time to play with lots of real and replica old toys.
  • see the toys in our new Toys Gallery and discover their stories!

Stay for the day

Pick up our binoculars and a ‘picture trail sheet’ and set out to explore the whole museum and park. There is plenty to discover in the new museum displays and entry to the museum is free.

Teacher feedback
