About

Dame Elizabeth Maconchy (1907 to 1994) was born in Broxbourne, Hertfordshire but spent her childhood in Ireland. 

She studied at the Royal College of Music in London, where she impressed her tutors, including Vaughan Williams, with her originality. Williams would remain a lifelong friend. 

She made her debut as a composer when her Concerto for Piano was performed by the Prague Philharmonic Orchestra in 1930. 

Dame Maconchy became a leader in her field, writing 13 string quartets, orchestral pieces, one-act operas, choral music, three ballets, five operas, and an operetta. 

She moved to Shottesbrook in Boreham in 1954 and was made a Dame in 1987.
