All licensed taxis and private hire vehicles in Chelmsford must provide assistance to wheelchair users and carry their wheelchair, if able to do so.

They must also carry any mobility aids, including assistance dogs.

Drivers must not charge extra for providing this service.

Hackney carriages (numbered 77 and above) have been designated as wheelchair accessible vehicles. These vehicles can carry a standard wheelchair (occupied or folded) and drivers must help the wheelchair user get in and out of the vehicle.

You should contact our Licensing team if a taxi licensed by us has refused to carry a wheelchair or not supported a wheelchair user in any way.

Some drivers may display an exemption certificate within the vehicle. This means they are exempt from providing assistance to wheelchair users. This could be due to medical or physical limitations.
